Monitor Assigned Frequencies to provide pilots with the communications access to obtain and pass flight information, or report emergencies. | Flight Planning. Provide pre-flight services which include the provision of weather information, NOTAM's, and runway surface condition reports. Accept and process flight plans and flight notifications. Assist pilots in compiling essential information for planning a safe flight. |
Relay IFR position reports and air traffic control clearances
in areas where aircraft are beyond the communications range of the ATC
facility. |
Aviation Weather Information Service. Provide pertinent aviation weather information for pilots at pre-flight and en- route stages. Assist pilots in making decisions and calculations based on weather. |
En Route Flight Information Service. Provide pilots with information on weather reports, forcasts, PIREP's, NOTAM's, altimeter settings and other operational information pertinent to the enroute phase of flight. | VFR Alerting Service. Notify Search & Rescue personnel in the event a VFR flight plan or flight notification is not closed within a specified time, or having received an overdue report for an aircraft. |
Airport Advisory Service. Provide advisory information that includes details on winds, preferred or active runways, altimeters, aircraft traffic, ground traffic and any other pertinent information at uncontrolled airports. |
Provide navigation assistance (VHF Direction Finding)
assistance to aircraft in emergency or potential emergency situations. |
Remote Airport Advisory Service. Consists of weather reports, runway recommendations, field condition reports, NOTAM, PIREP's and known aircraft and vehicle traffic. |
Issue and coordinate NOTAM's for locations or areas that are
assigned to them. |
Control vehicles operating on maneuvering areas of airports with a co-located control tower and FSS during the hours when the tower is closed. Provide this same service at airports without a control tower during hours that the FSS is operating. |
Collect and distribute PIREP's (Pilot Reports) of weather or
other significant information. |
Flight Service Stations are connected to fixed communications networks so that operational and administrative messages can be exchanged among FSS's domestic or international aeronautical agencies. | |
All
salaries used in this comparison are median salaries for the position
indicated. Nay Canada data was taken from the Nav Canada's web site on 6/10/02. Dollar figures are expressed in Canadian dollars. In addition to base salary, individuals posted to remote sites are eligible for a Northern Living Allowance of up to $12,000 per year, some subsidized housing and two trips per year to the closest major center. Individuals also receive extra pay for overtime, weekend or shift work, and for taking on extra responsibilities comparable to the FAA's OJI and CIC assignments.
